Culminating Reflection

Throughout my Capstone Project I had different opinions along the way. From things running smoothly, having fun, and just complete stress. This project has allowed me to change my perspective on many things and use it as of now and throughout my future. I had many different types of tactics to make this project more successful and there were many challenges but it has made me gain experience in so many ways.

During the stages of my Capstone project I've used critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. For starters, as I wrote my research paper I used critical thinking throughout the whole thing in order to get it done. From the outline and the very last draft I had to make things work the way they were suppose to. I've used communication because when I would have questions about my paper I would always ask as soon I can because I wanted things to be as "perfect" as they can be. I also used a lot of communication throughout my mentor hours because I constantly talked to all the rec leaders and kids about almost everything from just simple conversation or if I didn't understand how to do something. Creativity played and important role in my project because I would help kids in projects and create skits for them. I would always have to think outside the box in order to help the kids that I took care of. There were many other tactics that I used throughout the project like time management and patience which made a big impact on the way I would view and understand things.

The Capstone project has given a lot more than just a passing grade but a lot personally. Before the capstone project I've always wanted to start my own day care center and after getting the opportunity to do my mentor hours taking care of kids it allowed me to understand how difficult it could be but it made my goals to start my own for sure something I want to pursue. The love for kids just grew and my goal to start my own day care center became on the top of my list. The project has also made me more confident in talking to the kids, rec leaders, and parents. I've learned how to talk to each one of them a certain way and the right way. At the end, the capstone and made me gain a lot more that I can use in my future other than just being able to graduate.

I did have many challenges throughout my project but they all turned into just positive things. For instance, writing my paper was a stressful process because I couldn't find all my sources or fit the page requirement but at the end I got it done. It was even more of a success because my final draft was a much higher score than I anticipated it to be. Also, creating a performance was the kids was a challenge because the kids just became a complete mess. They were just really unfocused and most importantly wouldn't listen but I managed to get through it and create a presentation that ended up winning second place in a festivals competition. There is no challenge that can't turn into a success.

Mr. Migdail,

I talked to you about why my blog entries are not within three days of hours completed and would just to like to remind you of the situation that we have talked about.

Thank you,
Catherine Hosena

December 11, 2013

Today I enter park n rec and the kids were getting in trouble because one of the girls are cutting their hair. It was also time to clean up and for the rec leaders to have their meeting with their kids. They talked about the festival and just about their cards that I talked about previously. When the meeting was over I started to work with the kids again on their performance. After awhile I let them decorate their cups till it was time to go. During that time I traced kids hands and also my hand so we can make a big Christmas tree out of them.

After everyone cleaned up we all went to the computar lab. I played with Romey again on hide and seek and it was more tiring then yesterday because I had to run around more. When she got tired I set her up with a computar to watch Super Why. Especially when I take care of her I feel responsible since she is still a baby and it gives me more experience in different age groups of child care. Tomorrow I'm hoping that the kids can finish their decoration on the cups and also practice more on the performance.

13th Day

December 10, 2013

Today at park n rec I rehearsed with the group of kids that are going to perform for the festival. They all are getting better and better and I feel satisfied and proud for them. It's exciting because they get so happy when I tell them that they are doing to it correctly.

After cleaning up all the kids got in line to get ready to go to the computar lab. A three year old names Romey told me that this little boy pushed her. I went with her and asked the boy whey he pushed her. He said that she was getting to close to him. I told him that even if she's getting too close no matter what you don't push her, you nicely say for her to please move aside. The rec leader and my mentor all said "you tell him miss Catherine". I felt responsible and proud because I did something right and it was also noticed.

Getting into the computar lab I played with Romey and other girls to play hide and seek. It was tiring because I was too big to fit anywhere but it was really fun and cute. Romey can't fully pronounce my name but it sounds adorable and she's grown to really love me. I lot of the kids at park n rec are really warming up to me. It makes me feel like I'm an official rec leader instead of just a volunteer.

I hope that I can learn more and more to be a leader for the kids because I want to be responsible but also be fun. I'm happy that the kids are listening to me when it's time to get serious and they know when it's okay to have fun. I'm hoping the next time I go I'll have more opportunities to feel like a leader again.

12th Day

December 9, 2013

When I first got to park n rec, the rec leaders and my mentor were having a meeting with the kids like they usually do. They brought up the performance I'm helping set up and I was happy that more kids volunteered. I continued to help the kids and the more they practiced the more I noticed improvements. I was so proud. I'm starting to feel so much more closer to the kids and I love it. I'm happy that I get the opportunity to work but I'm enjoying what I'm doing.

Everyone started to clean up and we all went to the computar lab. I sat down for awhile drawing with some of the girls and then Romey wanted me to play with her so we decided to play hide and seek. I love playing with her especially since she's so little and the youngest in the group. She makes me feel so happy and energized. Playing with her and going to park n rec in general makes me really happy. They next time I go I hope that the kids I help with the performance fully get it down and also to be able to play with other group of kids that I haven't.

Eleventh Day

December 6, 2013

Today at park n rec, I rehearsed with the kids again for the festival. We only did a shorter time today because the kids wanted time to play also. The kids are getting better at it but they don't have it down yet. One of the girls is starting to give up but I told her to just keep trying. Later, we started to make decorations for the booth. I also played basketball with the little boys and my mentor. I didn't do that good of a job compared to the others but that's okay.

We all left to go to the computer lab and I set up this three year old so she can watch her show Super why. I kept her company and started asking her what the numbers and letters were. She was really smart because she knew most of them. Everyone soon enough started getting picked up and it was time to go.

I think it's fun that I get to have the chance to help the kids with the performance. I hope the next time I get to see them that I'll help them improve in their skit and help them make it look better.

Tenth Day

December 5, 2013

Today I helped girls set up with learning the cup song for a skit they have to do for a festival and the next day I would help pick a song that they will be able to sing. I thought it was so much fun and care free teaching the kids and them getting excited learning about it. We did that for the whole time till it was time to go to the computer lab.

In the computer lab, I played with a group of girls with a game that required a lot of thinking. It was getting frustrating for all of us.

I was happy working with the girls On the skit. Now I'll take the time to figure out a song for their skit and a way to improve it. I hope to perfect the skit so they will feel proud of themselves at the end.

Ninth Day

December 2, 2013

Today at park n rec I talked to my mentor and other rec leaders about their thanksgiving break and the stuff that they did. After, I went to talk to the kids and help them with their homework. A lot of kids needed help with social studies and math which are the worst subjects that I am in but their homework was a lot easier than my homework now. Later on, i talked to this little girl named Bella about the book she was reading and how she told me that I should read it also. Soon enough, it was time to clean up.

When all the kids finished cleaning up and sat in the key, all the rec leaders talked about a festival that happens every year that the kids have to do a skit. I volunteered to help out and help with their skit. They also talked about their White Elephant that they will be doing to celebrate Christmas. After becoming so attached with the kids I'm going to get a present so the kids can use that for the White Elephant. After spending time with the kids the more i want to volunteer for things because I enjoy it.

After the meeting, the kids and I all went upstairs to go play. I played volleyball with one of the rec leaders and two girls. It was hard game to play just because there was no net and no rules but it was still fun to play.

All the kids after went to the computer lab and I played with the kids on certain games that they wanted to play. They next time I go to park n rec i hope to help the kids create a dance for the skit and also plan what gifts to give the kids and rec leaders. I feel accomplished for almost remembering everyone's name.

Eighth Day

November 20, 2013

Right when I got to park n rec I sat at the fourth grade table and someone directly started to ask for help. One of the kids, Bella, really wanted to call me Cathy but u told her it would take me awhile to get used to. She would always call me and it would take me forever to answer and the other kids and I would just laugh at it. I moved tables because since homework time was over the kids that still had homework had to move to the side and I still had to help some of the kids.

Later, all the kids played a game that required people to run. It was making all the rec leaders and I laugh cause the kids were dramatic how tired they were. After the game, the kids lined up to go to the computer lab and while I was there I played with one of the girls again while talking to the rec leaders. I love getting the chance to help kids with homework because its a time to get serious but also play with the kids because its a time to have fun. Hopefully on my next visit I can help more kids with homework and maybe even join one of the games that all the kids play.

Seventh Day

November 19, 2013

When I entered park n rec the rec leaders and mentor welcomes me asking if everything was okay since I notified them a while ago that I wasn't going to make it for awhile. The kids also ran up to me hugging me and asking me where have a I been.

I started by helping kids with their math homework, it made me feel productive. It also made me realize that elementary school students have a lot of homework. I continued to help numerous amount of kids with their homework. It was mostly with the fourth graders since I was on their table.

The kids couldn't go upstairs to the playground since it was wet outside from the rain. The kids just ended up playing group games together which with for a prize. I watched the kids play while also helping the kids that didn't finish their homework. I always think its entertaining watching the kids play. It always makes me fill with joy since the kids are always so happy and care free.

When the kids got to the computer room, I played games with one of the girls till it was time to leave. I had so much fun coming back to park n rec, it reminded me how much I love going.

Sixth Day

Today I walked in kind of late than usual but as I entered the kids had to do a ten minute silent time because during their homework they talked way more than they should of. I said happy birthday to one of the rec leaders as I walked in and waited for the ten minutes to be done.

When the kids got to play upstairs I just sat down with this little girl because something happened to her foot. I just talked to her about what she did over her weekend till she was ready to play again. We joined these group of kids that played some type of fashion show that had police in it. I didn't really understand the game but I just played along to what was going on and listened to what I had to do.

After everyone went back downstairs, Katie, which is the rec leader who's birthday it was, handed out snacks for the kids.

I didn't get to stay long today but it was fun going back to park in rec since I haven't went there in a couple days. Today I didn't do much with the kids like I usually did since I came late and left early but tomorrow I'll be going and leaving at my regular time (hopefully).
